Dvir's first morning in New York City began, ironically, with a craving for something very familiar: coffee. After a long flight from Tel Aviv, he needed that caffeine boost. However, Starbucks in Manhattan was nothing like the cafés in Dizengoff Street.

He hesitated at the entrance, taking in the aroma and the sight of a line snaking its way to a bustling counter. Deciding to use this waiting time to his advantage, Dvir listened to the customers ahead of him, hoping to pick up on how to order.

A tall woman with bright red hair stepped up. "Can I get a venti iced caramel macchiato with almond milk and an extra shot, please?" she said.

Dvir frowned. He understood “iced” and “almond milk,” but what was "venti" or "macchiato"? And an extra shot of what?

Next, a man in a business suit ordered, "I'll have a tall dark roast, black, and a grande matcha green tea latte, thanks."

The sizes were puzzling. Was "tall" actually tall? And what on earth was "matcha"?

A couple, seemingly tourists like him, were next. "Two frappuccinos, one java chip and one vanilla bean, please. Oh, and add whipped cream on both!"

Dvir was at a complete loss. By now, he had a notepad out, jotting down words he didn't recognize.

His turn came up, and with a deep breath, he approached the barista. "Hello," he began in careful English, "I want... coffee?"

The friendly barista, noticing his hesitation, asked, "Do you want it hot or iced? And what size?"

Dvir, thinking on his feet, said, "Iced, please. And..." he glanced at his notepad, "Tall?"

The barista smiled, "Any milk preference or extra flavors?"

Dvir remembered the red-haired lady's order. "Almond milk," he replied confidently.

"Alright," said the barista, "Anything to eat with that?"

Dvir glanced at the display. "Blueberry muffin, please."

As he waited for his order, Dvir listened more. Someone ordered a "flat white with soy milk," another got a "cappuccino with a caramel drizzle," and someone else asked for a "nitro cold brew."

When his order was ready, Dvir took a sip of his drink. It was different from what he was used to, but delicious nonetheless. As he left Starbucks, he felt a small triumph. Today, he learned a new dimension of English, one coffee at a time.
