I Pacifica is a coastal town. One sunny day in August 2019, people from Pacifica found a small, injured sea turtle washed up on the shore. Because there were no other turtles nearby, the villagers understood he needed help. They knew he wouldn’t survive on his own.
II The villagers stayed with the turtle 24 hours a day. They built a temporary tank for the turtle to keep him safe. The children named the turtle Toto. The villagers asked a marine rescue organization for help. The organization sent medicine, money, and experts to save the turtle. These experts taught four villagers how to be turtle keepers. Turtle keepers are people who take care of turtles.
III But a turtle’s place is not in a temporary tank. A turtle should live in the ocean. Marine expert Dr. Lily Carter explained, "Toto should return to the ocean at some time. But first, he will need to recover and learn how to survive there." So his keepers waited for Toto to become healthy and strong. Then they moved him to a marine sanctuary near Pacifica as the first step before he returns to the ocean.
IV Now Toto's keepers are preparing him for life in the ocean. They have already taught him how to find food and avoid predators. They also taught him how to navigate using ocean currents. One day, Toto saw a group of wild sea turtles swimming nearby. When he saw them, he swam eagerly towards them, showing excitement. This indicated that Toto was ready to join other turtles in the wild.
V The marine rescue organization used modern scientific methods and succeeded in tracking Toto’s original habitat, including his family. Everyone hopes that when Toto returns to the ocean, his family will welcome him and that he will thrive in his natural environment.
