The Value of Apologies
I Maya was seventeen when she started her first job at a small café near her school. She worked three afternoons a week, taking orders and clearing tables. On her fourth day she made a mistake that she still remembers. A customer had asked for tea without sugar, and Maya, in a hurry, brought him a cup with two spoonfuls in it.
II The customer was not pleased. He pushed the cup away and said, loudly enough for the whole café to hear, that nobody listens any more. Maya felt her face turn red. She wanted to explain that the café was full, that three other tables were waiting, and that she had been working since two o'clock. Instead she said, "Sorry, I'll bring you another one," and walked quickly to the kitchen.
III Her manager, Ilan, was standing by the counter. He had heard everything. Maya expected him to be angry, but he asked her only one question: "Did you tell him you were sorry, or did you tell him you were busy?" Maya thought about it. She had said the word "sorry," but everything in her voice had been about herself.
IV She went back to the table with a fresh cup. This time she stopped, looked at the customer and said, "I brought you the wrong drink. That was my mistake, and I'm sorry." The man looked up, surprised. He nodded, and then, to Maya's astonishment, he apologised as well – for shouting.
V Maya still works at the café on weekends. She has made other mistakes since then, and she has learned that the words matter less than what stands behind them. "Anyone can say sorry," she says. "The hard part is meaning it while people are watching you."
