The Benefits of Volunteering

I Nadav needed sixty hours. His school required every eleventh-grade student to volunteer somewhere before the end of the year, and he had left it until the last possible month. He chose the animal shelter on the edge of town for one reason only: it was a ten-minute walk from his house.

II The work was not what he had imagined. In his mind he had seen himself playing with puppies. Instead, for two weeks, he washed floors, carried heavy sacks of food and cleaned cages. The dogs barked when he came near, and one of them backed away every time he opened her gate. Nadav counted his hours carefully and wrote them down in a notebook.

III In his third week, Tali, who ran the shelter, asked him to sit with a dog called Luna. Luna had arrived eight months earlier and stayed in the corner of her cage whenever a visitor came near. Tali's instructions were strange. Nadav was not to touch Luna, call her or feed her. He was to sit outside the cage, at a distance, and read out loud from any book he brought.

IV Nothing happened for eleven days. On the twelfth, Luna moved a little closer. By the end of the month she was lying against the bars while he read. Other things had changed too, though Nadav did not notice them at first. He was arriving early. He had begun explaining the rules to newer volunteers, and when a group of children visited, Tali asked him to show them around – something he would never have agreed to do in September.

V His sixty hours ended in April. Nadav still comes on Friday mornings. When people ask him why, he does not talk about the dogs. "I came to fill in a form," he says. "What I took home was the patience to wait for something slow, and most things worth having are slow."
